How to directly open a URL when clicking on a marker

by | Learn how to

In certain situations, you may wish to provide your map users with the option to navigate directly to an external website when they click on a marker. This can be particularly useful when you want to link to a dedicated website for a specific location or provide detailed maps for that particular area (referred to as drill-down maps).

With Mapme, you can easily enable this behavior using a special setting in the action button configurator.

How to set it up

To allow the map viewer to open a web page directly when clicking on a marker, follow these steps:

  • In the URL field, enter the URL you want to open when the marker is clicked. Enter the complete web page address, such as “https://www.mywebsite.com/page1”.
  • Leave the text button field empty.
  • In the action button configurator, check “Open external URL on marker click
  • Select the relevant open link mode (New Tab, Same Tab or Modal)

Link mode

When linking to another Mapme map (drill-down maps), we suggest using the “Same Tab” mode, as Mapme automatically enables seamless navigation between the interactive maps.

If you are linking to an external website, we recommend utilizing either the “New Tab” or “Modal” option. This allows users to conveniently switch back and forth between the map and the destination website without losing their progress or context.

Location display

When you set a direct marker link, it’s important to note that the user will not see the location details directly on the map when clicking on the marker. However, the location will still be visible in the category and search results list. If you don’t want that, you can remove this location from the list by disabling the location display. In the location details, click on Marker Customization > Content Display
