Mapme proudly partners with environmental nonprofits and charity organizations that are dedicated to advancing their causes and supporting communities and wildlife globally. Their work contributes significantly to the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants.
Nonprofits use interactive maps to showcase their activities, making them readily accessible to the people and communities that need them most. Maps for nonprofits are also ideal for promoting their achievements to attract more funding and expand their members and volunteer base.
Environmental Challenges
In today’s world, there are few issues more important than the serious environmental challenges we face, including:
- Air and water pollution
- Recycling and rehoming
- Climate change
- Deforestation and land degradation
In this blog, we highlight several interesting use cases of environmental maps and learn how interactive maps play a growing role in the green revolution.
Waste, Recycling, and Rehoming Maps
Need to get rid of something? It’s not always easy to know the best way to dispose of items. If an item has reached the end of its useful life, you want to find a place to recycle or dispose of it. In other cases, you might want to find a new home for it.
Interactive maps offer an excellent solution, enabling citizens to search by item type and locate places to donate, recycle, or dispose of items.
The Waste, Recycling and Rehoming Map built by the Beautification Trust is designed to be a go-to resource for all the waste management needs of residents in south and east Auckland!
If you’re looking to donate clothes, get rid of a mattress, or recycle batteries, the map helps residents find the nearest donation centers, recycling facilities, and waste management services.
With categories, subcategories, and filters, map users can easily select relevant items from a comprehensive directory and locate the nearest drop-off locations.
Wouldn’t it be great if every town and city had a similar map for its residents to use?
Nature Parks Map
National parks play a vital role in nature conservation. They protect habitats and wildlife, preserve biodiversity, and provide invaluable opportunities to educate the public about the importance of safeguarding the health of our planet for future generations.
An excellent example of this is the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, which works tirelessly to preserve, promote, and celebrate the Valley’s unique historic, natural, and recreational resources.
They’ve created a fantastic interactive map for visitors, highlighting hiking and cycling trails, canoe/kayak launch sites, visitor centers, and heritage sites.
This project showcases how incorporating media, such as beautiful pictures and stunning views of the valley, can enrich the user experience.
Interactive Map for Environmental Education
Environmental awareness begins with education. Youth4Nature is a youth-led international organization. It focuses on educating, empowering, and mobilizing young people to address ecological and climate crises.
Youth4Nature created an interactive Storymap, showcasing narratives from young people on climate and nature. The Storymap is a collection of personal local stories. The stories are plotted on a world map with filters like Region, Language, Format, Type, Author, and Campaign year. This allows viewers to tailor their exploration based on specific interests.
Viewers can also search the map by topics such as Arable/Pastoral Land, Conflict and Peace, and Deforestation. This feature helps young people find the stories that concern them the most regarding climate change.
The map also encourages viewers to submit their own stories, with a call-to-action button leading to a submission portal.
Impact Map for Environmental Projects
Many NGOs are working at the ground level directly supporting communities with basic needs such as housing, food, and clean water.
Interactive maps are a powerful medium for highlighting the impactful work undertaken by these NGOs.
A wonderful example of this is Water for Women, which is the Australian Government’s flagship water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program. In this fascinating map, you can learn about the different WASH projects being supported across 16 countries in the Asia Pacific region.
You can also see examples in this map of how videos have been uploaded to enrich the viewers’ interactive experience.
Sustainability Initiative Map
Historically, the fashion industry has been known for its detrimental environmental impact. When purchasing new clothes or shoes, many consumers wonder about the workers’ conditions and the amount of pollution and contaminants released into the environment.
As a great show of transparency, the David Jones brand designed an interactive map showing the global locations and addresses of all their factories, including details such as the types of products they manufacture and demographic statistics about the workers at each location. Learn more about sustainability maps for brand transparency.
To help the fashion industry, the Fashion Sustainability Initiative Group created an interactive map to identify on-ground technical sustainability programs which suppliers can participate in.
For example, a manufacturer using cotton as a material could find programs that work with farmers in India to improve water efficiency in sustainable cotton-based production systems. Local farmers are trained on how to use water more efficiently, to increase yields, and improve the quality of production.
This is just the Beginning
