Google My Maps is a free map creator offered by Google. With Google My Maps, you can add locations with custom pins, layers, and directions. For each place-mark, you can add images, videos, and text.
Google My Maps is a great mapping tool. However, it has limited categories, filters, and customization and branding features. . Categories and filters are also limited. You can check this blog post to learn more about the differences between Google My Maps and Mapme.
If you create a map with Google My Maps and are interested in using Mapme, we created this guide to help you easily migrate your data from Google My Maps to Mapme.
Export your Google My Maps
The first step is to export your data from Google My Maps. Click on the three-dots menu next to your map title and select the Export to KMZ/KML option:

From the drop-down menu, select either the entire map or a specific map layer.
Select the “Export as KML instead of KMZ” option to download the KML file.

Convert the KML file to CSV
You can leverage some free online tools in order to convert the KML file to a CSV file. We recommend MyGeodata Cloud converter.
Once you converted your KML file to CSV, it will look like this example:

Add your data to the Mapme import template
You can find here the Mapme import template here, for Excel, or for Google Sheet.
Copy/paste the data from the converted CSV file to the Mapme template.
- Copy the location names and and paste in the corresponding fields
- Copy the X coordinates to the longitude field
- Copy the Y coordinates to the latitude field
Do not change the field names (header) in the Mapme template. The import will not work.
Once all of the data has been copied into the Mapme import template, download the spreadsheet in CSV format (if you are using Google Sheets) or save as CSV with UTF-8 encoding (if you are using Excel).
You can now import all of your data at once to populate your Mapme map.
What if I have multiple layers in Google MyMaps?
Layers in Google MyMaps correspond to Mapme categories. Check our guide for Categories and Filters.

You can convert your Google MyMap layers into Mapme categories.
If you have multiple layers, the KML to CSV file converter will generate a separate file for each layer and zip them together.

Unzip the file and copy the data of each file in the Mapme import template.
When you copy the data, add the name of the layer in the category field.
