General Instructions for All Map Analytics Reports
We’ll be using GA4’s Explore feature to create these interactive map reports. This setup is common to all the map analytics reports you’ll generate.
- Start by creating a blank exploration report. We recommend naming it “Mapme Report Template”.

- Import custom dimensions created during the custom definitions setup process:
- Click on the + sign next to Dimensions
- Expand the Custom section
- Select all the Mapme custom dimensions
- Click Import

- Add Event Count:
- Click on the + sign next to Metrics
- Select “Event count”
- Click Import

- If you have multiple maps in your account, add a filter to show results for a specific map:
- Click on the + button under Filters
- Select the “Mapme Maps” dimension and match type “Exactly Matches”
- Paste the map ID (found in the Mapme editor under the About section)

1. Map visits Report
Tracking map visits gives you valuable insight into how much traffic your map is receiving and how engaged your users are. It’s also a strong indicator of your map’s reach and growth over time. By monitoring visits, you can evaluate whether your promotional efforts are paying off or if new strategies might be needed.
How to improve your map using this data?
- Compare visits across different time periods to measure the impact of campaigns or events.
- If visits are low, try sharing the map on multiple channels such as social media, your website, or blogs.
- Use the data to decide whether the map should be embedded in more places, promoted differently, or given greater visibility.
What to look for?
-
Check the total number of visits for a specific map.
-
The event that measures visits is called “map load.” Each session counts as one visit and can last up to 12 hours. During that time, a user may explore multiple pages within the map, but it’s still considered a single visit.
-
Keep in mind: if a user reloads the map or opens it on a different device, this will start a new session and count as another visit.
How to create this report?
- Create a new blank exploration report.
- Add ‘Mapme maps’ dimension to the row section.
- Add ‘Event count’ to the Values section.
- Create a filter, add ‘Mapme actions’.
- Set the condition for the filter to ‘exactly matches’.
- Type ‘map-load’ then hit apply.
- Select your desired date range.
2. Most Popular Locations Report
This report shows which locations on your map receive the most engagement, helping you understand what content resonates most with your audience. It highlights areas of high user interest and can guide decisions about which locations to promote or improve.
How to improve your map using this data?
- Promote high-performing locations more prominently on your site or social media.
- Analyze low-performing locations and consider enhancing their descriptions, media, or titles.
- Reposition popular locations on the map or group them into featured filters to increase visibility.
What to look for?
A map location can be accessed in two ways:
- By clicking directly on its marker on the interactive map
- By selecting it from a list (filter or search result)
Each action triggers a unique event that we can track independently or together:
- map-section-marker-click for direct marker taps
- list-section-selection for list selection clicks
For a complete list of all recorded events, check our events documentation.
How to create this report?
- Duplicate the “Mapme Report Template”
- Click on the + button next to Segment
- Click on “Create a new segment” in the top right
- Select “Event segment”
- Name your segment “Locations Views”
- Search for ‘Mapme actions’
- Select Mapme actions, tap ‘Add filter’
- Set the condition to ‘exactly matches’, add ‘map-marker-click’ and hit ‘apply’
- Click the ‘OR’ button and repeat for ‘list-section-selection’
When completed, your segment should look like this:

Click ‘Apply’ in the top right corner. Then:
- Add ‘Mapme values’ to Rows settings
- Add ‘Event count’ to the Values Settings
You’ll now see a list of locations with their assigned names and unique IDs, along with the total number of visits each received:

Pro Tip: To analyze marker clicks and list selections separately, create two independent reports with the corresponding event as the segment.
3. Most Used Filters Report
Category filters are a powerful feature that users leverage to narrow down content on your interactive map. Understanding which filters users engage with the most helps you identify which categories or types of content are most relevant to them. This can improve the user experience and guide how you organize map content.
How to improve your map using this data?
- Reorder filters so the most-used appear first or are pre-selected.
- Merge underused categories or rename them for clarity.
- Use top filters to inspire content creation or location grouping strategies.
What to look for?
Different filter types trigger different events, allowing you to track them together or independently:
- single-cat-filter – direct category selection (no checkboxes)
- multi-cat-filters – multi-select categories (checkboxes)
- multi-cat-select-level1 – multilevel and multiselect categories (parent)
- multi-cat-select-level2 – multilevel and multiselect categories (subcategories)

Your completed segment should look like this:

- Add ‘Mapme values’ to the Rows settings
- Add ‘Event count’ to the Values settings

4. Most Searched Keywords Report
Search keywords reveal what users are actively trying to find. This gives insight into user intent and shows whether your current content aligns with their needs.
How to improve your map using this data?
-
Make sure popular keywords appear in titles or descriptions of your locations.
-
Add new locations or categories that match frequent search terms.
-
Simplify keyword phrasing if users are searching using slightly different terms than your content uses.
What to look for?
- Look at the values of search input terms (custom dimensions) and their corresponding event counts.
- Identify repeated or trending keywords.
How to create this report?
To create this report, follow similar steps to the previous reports but configure it to track search-related events. You’ll see a list of keywords and their search frequencies:

5. Call to Action Clicks Report
This report helps you measure which locations on your map drive the most meaningful user actions, such as clicks to websites, booking links, or registration forms. It acts as a proxy for user intent and conversion performance.
How to improve your map using this data?
Low or high CTA performance can be influenced by two key factors:
- The CTA itself — experiment with more engaging or action-oriented language (e.g., “Book Now” vs. “Learn More”) and adjust formatting (font size, bold colors).
- The location context — users may ignore CTAs if the associated location lacks appeal. Enhance titles, descriptions, and images to better attract attention and align with user interests.
Use the data to identify which combination of content and CTAs resonates most, and apply those insights to optimize other locations.
What to look for?
- GA4 event: section-details-call-to-action
- Break down event count by individual locations and CTA types to identify which ones are working best.
How to create this report?
- Duplicate the “Mapme Report Template”
- Add ‘Mapme values’ to the Rows settings
- Add ‘Event count’ to the Values settings
You’ll initially see a list of all events. Narrow it down with a filter:
- Click on the + button under Filters
- Select “Mapme Values” dimension and match type “Exactly Matches”
- In the Expression field, enter: section-details-call-to-action
