Setting up your category structure correctly is essential for filters to work as expected. A good structure makes your map easier to use and ensures that filtering behaves consistently.
Step 1: Create Parent Categories
Start by creating your main categories. These are your parent categories and represent the top-level groups on your map.
Examples:
- Floors (Floor 1, Floor 2, Floor 3)
- Content types (Restaurants, Hotels, Attractions)
- Filter groups (Pricing, Property Type, Bedrooms)
Step 2: Create Subcategories
Subcategories are the options inside each parent category.
They provide more detailed filtering.
Examples:
- For floors: Offices, Meeting Rooms, Elevators
- For restaurants: Italian, Chinese, Vegan
- For pricing: Under $500k, $500k–$1M
Step 3: Add or Remove Subcategories from a Parent Category
Once you have created your parent categories and subcategories, you can decide which subcategories belong under each parent.
To add or remove subcategories from a parent category:
- Open the parent category you want to edit.
- Locate the Add Subcategories section.
- Click the + icon next to a category name to add it to the parent category.
After that, you will see two lists:
- Subcategory list — shows the subcategories currently assigned to the parent category. Click the − icon to remove a subcategory from the parent.
- Add Subcategories list — shows subcategories that are not yet assigned to the parent category. Click the + icon to add them.
A subcategory can be assigned to more than one parent category if needed. For example: “Offices” can belong to Floor 1, Floor 2, and Floor 3

Step 4: Assign Categories to Locations
Each location should be assigned to the appropriate categories based on your structure.
- Structured maps (floors, campuses): assign locations to a parent category and one or more subcategories
- Guides and directories: often assign locations to subcategories only
Tips for a Good Structure
- Keep parent categories simple and easy to understand
- Use subcategories to add detail without cluttering the main list
- Make sure every location is assigned consistently
- Think about how users will explore your map, not just how data is organized
Once your structure is set up, you can control how users interact with it using filter settings. Learn more in the Category Filters Guide
