Understanding Layers

Layers allow you to add visual elements on top of your map and control how they appear and interact with users.

Unlike locations, which are organized using categories and displayed with markers, layers are used to add additional visual context such as drawings, images, text, and 3D buildings.

Layers can be used to:

  • Highlight important areas or routes
  • Display floorplans, drone imagery, and other images
  • Add labels and annotations
  • Highlight specific buildings in 3D
  • Create more immersive and interactive map experiences

Layer Types

Mapme supports multiple layer types. Some are available today, while others will be released in future updates.

Layer Type Description Status
✏️ Drawings Lines, shapes, and area borders displayed on the map. Available
📷 Images Floorplans, logos, drone imagery, and other images. Available
🔤 Text Labels, annotations, and map notes. Coming Soon
🏢 3D Building Highlight and interact with specific buildings in 3D. Available
📦 3D Models Add custom 3D objects such as buildings, landmarks, and structures. Coming Soon

Overlays Layers vs. 3D Object Layers

Layers are organized into two groups:

Overlays

Overlay layers are displayed on top of the map and can be reordered to control how they overlap. Current and planned overlay layer types include:

  • ✏️ Drawings
  • 🖼 Images
  • 🔤 Text (coming soon)

For example, you may want a floorplan image below a drawing layer, or text labels above all other overlays.

3D Objects

3D Objects Layers are used to highlight specific buildings in 3D.

Unlike overlays, 3D object layers are always displayed above overlay layers and cannot be reordered.

Future versions will also support custom 3D models within this section.

Common Layer Features

All layer types share a common set of controls that make it easy to manage how they appear and behave on the map.

Visibility

Visibility Rules

Visibility rules allow you to control when a layer is displayed on your map. For example, a layer can be shown:

  • Always
  • Only on the map home view
  • When specific locations are selected
  • When one or more categories are selected
  • When a location from a specific category is selected

You can combine multiple conditions to create dynamic map experiences. For example, a floorplan could appear only when a building location is selected, or a campus boundary could appear only when a specific category is active.

Zoom Level Visibility

Use zoom-level visibility to display layers dynamically. For example, show one layer at a high zoom level and switch to another layer at closer zoom levels.

Interactivity

Control whether users can interact with a layer. Interactive layers can:

  • Open a map view
  • Open an external URL
  • Trigger other layer-specific actions

Display Order

Overlay layers can be reordered to control which layers appear above others on the map.

Layers at the top of the list are displayed above layers below them.

Layer-Specific Settings

In addition to the shared controls above, each layer type includes settings specific to that type.

Layer Type Examples of Layer-Specific Settings
✏️ Drawings Colors, line width, fill opacity, extrusion height, outlines
🖼 Images Opacity, position, scale, rotation
🔤 Text Font, size, color, alignment
🏢 3D Building Layers Building selection, colors, visibility
📦 3D Models Model selection, scale, rotation, positioning

Getting Started

To create a layer:

  1. Open Layers from the left menu.
  2. Select either Overlays or 3D Buildings.
  3. Create a new layer.
  4. Configure its appearance, visibility, and interactivity.

You can create multiple layers and combine them to build rich, interactive map experiences.
