Automatic Marker Numbering for Maps

The Automatic Marker Numbering feature lets you automatically label map markers with sequential numbers, optional prefixes, and a custom starting number. It is designed for indoor maps, floor plans, and structured location labeling. It is especially useful for floor plans, indoor maps, and any scenario where locations must follow a clear, logical numbering system.

Benefits of Automatic Marker Numbering

Save Time and Reduce Errors

Automatically generate marker labels instead of numbering them manually. This avoids mistakes and keeps numbering consistent across your map.

Clear, Structured Labels

Create professional, easy-to-understand labels such as room numbers, classroom IDs, or apartment numbers.

Flexible for Different Mapping Needs

Whether you need simple numbers (1, 2, 3) or structured IDs (A100, B205), the combination of starting number and prefix adapts to your use case.

Ideal for Indoor and Multi-Floor Maps

Perfect for floor plans where numbering conventions matter and must align with real-world signage.

Common Use Cases

Floor Plans with Classrooms

Number of classrooms starting from 100 on each floor:

  • Starting number: 100
  • Prefix: (optional) A

Result: A100, A101, A102…

This aligns with common academic building conventions, making navigation easier for students and staff.

Hotel Rooms

Create hotel room numbers by floor:

  • Starting number: 201
  • Prefix: (none or optional floor letter)

Result: 201, 202, 203…

Or with a prefix: B201, B202, B203…

Office Buildings

Label meeting rooms or offices by wing or zone:

  • Starting number: 1
  • Prefix: West-

Result: West-1, West-2, West-3…

How Automatic Marker Numbering Works

  1. Open Categories in the left menu
  2. Click on a Category in the Category List
  3. Open “Marker Style Customization” (marker editor)
  4. Enable the automatic numbering by selecting Serial #
  5. Set the Starting Number:
    • This defines the first number in the sequence.
    • Example: starting at 100 generates 100, 101, 102…
  6. (Optional) Add a Prefix:
    • The prefix appears before each number.
    • Example: prefix “A” with starting number 100 generates A100, A101, A102…

Reordering Markers

You can change the order of numbered markers by reordering locations in the Location List. Marker numbers update automatically to reflect the new sequence.

Reorder markers manually

  1. Open Locations from the left menu.
  2. Use the Category filter to select the relevant category.
  3. Drag and drop locations within the list to change their order.

The marker numbers associated with each location will update instantly to maintain the correct sequence.

Reordering large categories

For categories with many locations, we recommend using Import / Export to sort locations efficiently and at scale. Learn more.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use prefixes to indicate floors, wings, or zones (A, B, East, West).
  • Keep prefixes short for better readability on the map.
  • When duplicating or adding markers, automatic numbering ensures labels stay consistent.

This feature helps you maintain clean, scalable, and professional marker labeling—especially for complex maps such as campuses, buildings, and multi-floor indoor maps.
