Mapme lets you control the order in which locations and categories appear on your public map. You can choose to:
- Sort automatically by alphabetical order, or
- Arrange them manually in any order you want.
Overview — when to use each option
If you want visitors to find items quickly by name, enable alphabetical sorting. If you need a curated or logical flow (for example: “Featured”, “New”, “Nearby”), use manual ordering.
Alphabetical sorting
Mapme can automatically sort both Locations and Categories.
For multi‑level (parent/subcategory) setups, you can enable alphabetical sorting separately for parent categories and for subcategories.
How to enable alphabetical sorting
- Open Categories in the editor.
- Go to Sorting.
- Toggle Enable alphabetical ordering for Categories, Locations, or both.

Manual ordering — arrange the list any way you want
Reordering categories
In the Categories panel, use the drag handle on the left of each category to move it into the order you want. This order will be reflected on the public map (unless you’ve enabled alphabetical sorting for categories).
Effect of category order:
- It controls the order in which categories appear in the legend on your map.
- It also determines the order in which category markers are drawn on the map. Learn more.
Reordering locations
You have two convenient methods to reorder locations:
1. Manual sorting in the editor
- Open Locations from the left menu.
- Use the Category filter to select the relevant category.
- Drag and drop locations within the list to change their order.

2. Sort using Import / Export (recommended for large lists)
If you have many locations, it’s often faster to reorder them in a spreadsheet and re‑import with Sync mode.
- Export your locations with the Export feature.
- Open the CSV/Excel file and move rows to match the desired display order. Do not remove the mapmeId column — it identifies each location.
- Save the file.
- Import the file and choose SYNC mode.
Notes about importing:
- Always keep the mapmeId column when moving rows — deleting it will create new locations instead of updating existing ones.
- If you accidentally import without the mapmeId column, duplicates can be created. If that happens, use the editor or contact support to clean up duplicates.

Best practices
- Use alphabetical order for long lists where visitors search by name.
- Use manual ordering for curated experiences (featured items first).
- When importing, publish and duplicate your map before re-importing changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn’t the order I set in the editor appear on the public map?
If alphabetical sorting is enabled for that list (categories or locations), Mapme overrides manual order on the live map. Disable alphabetical sorting to show your manual order.
I changed the CSV order and re‑imported, but the map order didn’t update — why?
Check you used SYNC mode and that the mapmeId column was present and unchanged. If you used “Add” mode instead of “Sync”, new locations may have been created instead of updating existing ones.
Can I sort locations across multiple categories at once?
We recommend reordering by category first in your Excel, then reorder within each category.
