Multiple Category Selection (Multiselect): Advanced Filtering

Multiselect lets users select multiple categories at the same time. This can create powerful filters, but it works best when your audience benefits from combining selections.
If you’re looking for a simpler filtering experience for most users, start with: Categories & Filters: How Map Filtering Works?

When Should I Use Multiselect?

  • You want users to combine filters (for example: “Under $500k” + “2 Bedrooms” + “For Sale”)
  • Your map is a directory and users need advanced search
  • You expect users to compare results across categories

If your map is a building or floor map, Single Selection with Parent Category View is often a better experience.
Learn more here: Multilevel Categories.

Note: Multiselect can also be used on maps with a single category level. In most cases, the added flexibility is outweighed by the extra complexity for users—so we recommend enabling it only when you have a clear use case.

Multiselect Relationship Settings

In Multiselect mode, you can control how multiple selections work together:

  • Relationship between parent categories (when users select more than one parent)
  • Relationship between parent and subcategories (how a parent and its subcategories combine)
  • Relationship between subcategories (when users select more than one subcategory)

To understand what Combine and Intersect mean in each case, see: Category Filter Settings

Real Estate Listings

Common pattern: locations are assigned to subcategories (values) such as price range, number of bedrooms, property type, and more.
Parent categories often describe the filter group (for example: “Pricing” or “Bedrooms”).

  • Relationship between parent categories: Intersect
  • Relationship between parent and subcategories: Combine
  • Relationship between subcategories: Combine

City Guides

City guides usually prioritize discovery, so settings that show broader results tend to work best.

Tip: “Others” When Some Locations Are Only in Parent Categories

If some locations are assigned to a parent category but not to any subcategory, Mapme may show an “Others” group in certain filter combinations.

Others includes locations that belong to the parent category but are not assigned to any subcategory.
